THE East New Britain Rugby League (ENBRL) Nines tournament is set to kick off on Saturday and will end on Nov 28.
ENBRL acting chairman Melly Tamlik said the tournament was supposed to start at the beginning of the year but was postponed to this month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said Rabaul Rugby League, Gazelle Rugby League and Kokopo Rugby League clubs would compete in the tournament.
Tamlik said there 16 teams confirmed for the tournament, with four women’s sides.
“Previously, we have been fielding only men’s teams,” he said.
“But now, we are fielding women’s teams too.
“We are using this tournament to trial the Covid-19 protocols that have been put in place by the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League.”
Tamlik said the tournament would be used to scout players for possible inclusion in the Rabaul Gurias squad for the Digicel Cup next season.
