The Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) in East New Britain has advised that the maximum fares for Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) and taxis will remain unchanged for this year. Manager of Islands ICCC regional office in Kokopo, Dorcas Julai, said that the decision to maintain the current fare rates comes in light of minor fluctuations observed in fuel prices and the Consumer Price Index from the third quarter of 2021 to the third quarter of 2023. Julai said that bus fares from the previous year will remain the same throughout this year.
She said that the fares cover both the urban and rural routes to ensure consistency and fairness in transportation costs.
Julai urged PMV operators to adhere to the rules and regulations already established by the ICCC, underscoring the importance of compliance for the benefit of all stakeholders.
She further encouraged the public to advise the ICCC office of any concerns or complaints regarding the fares.
“This approach aims to foster transparency and accountability within the transportation sector, ensuring that consumer interests are considered and addressed,” she said.
