A member of a gang who allegedly robbed a shop in Rabaul, East New Britain, earlier this year was nabbed by police this week.
Edmund Steven, 22, from Kasmata, in Kandrian, West New Britain, was arrested by undercover policemen at Rabaul town.
Provincial police commander Senior Inspector Joseph Tabali said Steven was identified as one of the alleged robbers from a footage obtained from the shop’s closed circuit television (cctv) camera.
“He was among six other men armed with homemade guns and bush knives who allegedly held up JJS Holdings supermarket in Atham, Rabaul, on March 2,” Tabali said.
“The gang hijacked a PMV bus, drove into the shop and held up the staff and manager and escaped with K19,400 in cash and other goods,” he said. “They were on the run until Steven was caught by police this week.
“We know the identity of the other suspects through cctv footages obtained from the shop.”
Tabali said it was a matter of time before the other six were arrested.
Last month, police shot four suspects who attempted to rob the Garden Enterprise Copra Buying Point along Malaguna Road.
Two died instantly and the other two were admitted at the Nonga General Hospital with gunshot wounds.
