EAST New Britain Governor Leo Dion has praised people in the province for celebrating Christmas and New Year with respect and meaning.
Dion said he was pleased to see many people observe and celebrate in the true spirit and meaning of Christmas.
He said while it was a time for feasts and family gatherings and commitments, the people of the province had again displayed maturity and responsibility in celebrating without major reports of violence and disturbances in the communities.
He said while he appreciated the attitude of the people, there were still others who used the occasion to
drink alcohol and used drugs
before causing problems with family members and others.
He urged the people to maintain law and order in 2012.
Mothers in Gazelle district said while Christmas was peaceful, new year celebrations in their district were different from previous years.
They said there was more unwanted noise that kept their communities awake, with drunkards walking around and disturbing the peace.
“Increase in knowledge is a positive thing in our communities however many people have abused it during New Year celebrations,” said a mother in Gazelle district.
Another mother in the Vunamami-Kokopo LLG said they had a “trouble free” New Year celebrations compared to 2010.
