Enforce law to prevent poor goods, official says

THE country can safeguard its consumers if it enforces laws to prevent substandard goods from entering the country, an official says.
East New Britain deputy administrator Levi Mano said this during the closing of a four-day draft trade and agreement policy workshop in Kokopo last Friday.
“PNG has a lot of policies and legislations and we should not be allowing substandard goods into the country,” he said.
“The challenge is how we can polish this draft trade and agreement policy when we are unable to polish laws that are already with us.
“We should not be allowing expired goods to come in. These are now on shelves in Kokopo shops.”
Mano said a recent effort by Customs, Naqia and police was conducted in Kokopo to check Chinese-run shops for selling the right goods.
“But it needs a big effort and willpower of our own public service to make sure we implement the existing laws in our country,” he said.
“The challenge is to go back to those laws and make sure that you exercise and use appropriate laws for the benefit of our people.”
