Escapee surrenders to police

A MAN who was one of 11 prisoners who broke out of Kerevat jail on April 28, surrendered to police on Monday, Kokopo police say.
Hendry Ume, 40, of Tagitagi village, Gazelle district, East New Britain, was serving a 23-year sentence for rape when he escaped along with 10 others.
East New Britain police commander Snr Insp Joseph Tabali said Ume’s surrender to public prosecutor Renagen Lakara brought the number of escapees recaptured to eight with three still at large.
He said Ume was taken to Kerevat and charged for escaping from lawful custody.
Tabali said of the recaptured escapees two were shot and killed, two were wounded, one surrendered voluntarily and the other three were recaptured by the police – all six were now in police custody.
The two who were killed were Vincent Pauria and Samuel Judas while Samuel Max Paieti and Taken Waninara were wounded and recaptured.
The other three recaptured were Jason Dominic, Paul Madu Warait, and Robin Ezekiel.
The three escapees yet to be recaptured are Exon Pinia, Henry Penny and Valvalu Lane.
Pinia, 23, from Kokopo district, was on remand charged with attempted robbery; Penny, 20, from Pomio district, was on remand charged with sexual penetration; and, Lane, 36, from Kokopo district, was serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery.
