Ex-constable re-arrested after escaping

A FORMER police constable facing a double-murder charge was recaptured in his Karkar Island home in a predawn raid by a police party yesterday.
Madang commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said Quera Yarti was charged with murder last year but escaped from custody at the Modilon Hospital.
“A police party raided his home following a tip-off that he was in his house.
“Yarti was alleged to have shot dead two men, one a primary school teacher.
“Re-arresting a double-murder suspect who was a former cop will help restore public confidence in the police force.”
He said Yarti was attached to the Karkar police station when he allegedly committed the crimes last year.
Police also arrested three other suspects for crimes committed on the island.
Supt Rubiang reiterated that policemen were willing to work hard to uphold law and order but “need public cooperation and information and funding”.
