Ex-prisoner gets second chance

AN ex-prisoner at Buimo jail in Morobe will now be able to make a living for himself after serving 14 years in jail.
David Koro Warwarick from Wain in Nawaeb was the first recipient of a 150kg bale of second-hand clothes under the prison’s detainee re-integration programme.
The programme was initiated by Buimo jail commander Superintendent Felix Namane and his administration to help ex-prisoners have a chance of earning a living in the community after their prison terms.
Namane said Buimo has had major jail breaks for the last months but that did not mean their rehabilitation initiative would be affected.
He said he was happy with the clothing company that assisted in the detainee rehabilitation programme.
The programme would give the former prisoners an incentive to keep them occupied in their communities.
He told The National that out of the three bales of second-hand clothes that Buimo received, one would be distributed to ex-prisoners, one would be used to raise funds for the detainees’ rehabilitation programme and the third would be distributed to the poor and the sick at Angau Memorial General Hospital.
He said ex-prisoners who received assistance from Buimo were those who have served terms of over five years.
