A BANGLADESHI man was arrested and detained at the Boroko Police Station by a special investigation team, an official says.
Minister for Immigration and Border Security Westly Nukundj said the man was previously running a chain of small trade stores in settlements in Port Moresby under a one-man company using local women as fronts to enter into reserved businesses.
He said the man, while out on bail, absconded his bail conditions and went to Jiwaka and again, married a local woman and was illegally running a small trade store in Kimil village outside of Banz town without proper documents. Nukundj said the special investigation team, comprising personnel from Immigration, Labour Department and police, upon receiving information, conducted an early morning raid and arrested the Bangladeshi as he was attempting to escape by crossing the Waghi River.
“No foreigner will escape as I have set up a strong team headed by an experienced team leader and will hunt down anyone who defies our laws and will show them the exit door (deportation),” he said.
Nukundj said this was part of an ongoing investigation after the discovery of fake visas.
He said so far, a total of 34 foreigners had being arrested in Northern, Jiwaka and Western Highlands and more arrests and deportations were anticipated.
