Expensive flights

Letters

Domestic airfares have become so expensive they have become a burden on the subsistence-driven, simple people of Marawaka in Eastern Highlands.
The average income per capita in Marawaka is about K500. The return fare on a PNG Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) flight is K800.
The ordinary people of Eastern Highlands cannot afford to travel by air anymore.
A one-way ticket costs K400 and freight costs K4/kg. If you want to charter a plane for your produce, then a small Cessna aircraft will set you back K2900 and a Twin Otter more than K7000 – from Goroka Airport to Marawaka on a 45-minute flight.
Again, the ordinary people are suffering.
Where are the leaders and MPs who should be dealing with issues like this?
Should the local MP not be trying to find a way of subsidising the airfare and freight?
