Failed election blamed on law problems

THE main reason why some of the 96 ward elections failed was because of law and order problems, Minister for Inter-Government Relations Pila Niningi says.
Acting Electoral Commissioner John Kalamoroh announced that out of the 96 writs only 84 writs were successful while the remaining 12 writs were interrupted by security issues, violence and voters refusing to vote.
Kalamoroh presented the 84 writs to Niningi during a press conference in Port Moresby.
He said by next year he would issue the 12 writs and complete the supplementary election.
Niningi said he was proud because of the successful work they had done so far despite the law and order issues they had encountered during the LLG elections in different wards.
“For the first time in history of Papua New Guinea all the Highlands region didn’t nominate themselves,” he said.
“It has caused us a lot of money to invest throughout the wards to carry out their elections.”
