FAIRFAX Volleyball Association praised National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop for his support of last week’s Governor’s Cup.
Association president Patrick Morea said the tournament was aimed at involving youths in sports and helping address social problems in the city.
“I want to say a big thanks to Governor Parkop for his continued support to sports in general,” he said.
“This support would go a long way in developing the mindset of youths who had taken part in this tournament.
“Special thanks to tournament director Koavea Karulaka and all five clubs — Jamas, Raukele, Nasobe, Freeway Hoks and Matala — for making this event a successful one.”
Meanwhile, National Capital District Commission sports manager and former president Kila Dick reiterated their stance on stopping violence in communities.
“We have to be strong in our stand against ill behaviour such as violence in homes, especially violence against women,” he said.
“The three-day tournament saw Jamas take out the men’s and women’s titles against Nasobe and Raukele respectively.”
In the men’s division, Jamas beat Nasobe to claim the 46th Independence title in a five-set thriller with little separating both sides.
Jamas’ Papua New Guinea representative Simon Tua was supported by Samuel Mea and Ronnie Kila.
Nasobe, under skipper Igo Koae and setter Gabe Overe, held on to a close finish, but Jamas had the last say with a 15-12 scoreline in the final set.
