ELEVEN families were left homeless and helpless after their two homes went up in flames at Moitaka Ranch, 9-Mile, in Port Moresby, last month.
The landlord of one of the houses, Raphael Kawage, told The National yesterday that the fire, on June 29, started in one of his tenant’s rooms that had kerosene.
Kawage said there were nine rooms in the property.
“When the fire erupted, it brought the whole house down, also the neighbour’s house, from the strong winds.”
Firefighters arrived but could not help much by then.
According to PNG Fire Service chief fire officer Billy Roo, investigations were continuing. “The preliminary brief showed that the fire started from an unattended kerosene stove,” he said.
The 11 families are currently living in tents near their homes.
They appealed for help from local MP John Kaupa, NCD Governor Powes Parkop and the public.

  • The real story here is ELEVEN families paying rent to the landlord for living in two homes
That reflects the back story of those asking for more bigger resource projects. What has happened in PNG over 50 years of big mines.
Cant they see how useless such massive resource projects have been for the majority of ordinary citizens of PNG?
