THE Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea is aiming to create awareness on the health benefits of sports while it continues to deliver development initiatives around the country.
“We have plans to return to Kerema next month,” president Karo Lelai told The National.
She was with fellow federation officials to deliver their Hoops for Health initiative in Kerema, Gulf, last week.
The federation is partnering the PNG Olympic Committee and PNG Sports Federation to deliver the initiative.
“We will roll out the initiative in Lae and Goroka next year,” Lelai said.
“Our aim is to create awareness on the health benefits of sports and how people can avoid non-communicable and life style diseases such as diabetes.”
She said they were able to conduct coaching and refereeing workshops, and also introduce three-on-three basketball in Kerema.
“We also met with Kerema basketball officials who are looking to restart competitions in Kerema after a long break,” Lelai said.
“Last week’s turnout was good. We had people of all ages took part in the workshops and matches.”
BFPNG officials Betty Angula, Jordan Sere and Kora Mea, Basketball Technical Commission chairman Ronnie Mea, and 2015 Pacific Games powerlifting gold medalist Linda Pulsan were also part of the delegation.
Pulsan shared her experiences to motivate the participants.
