Feeder roads progressing well: Powi

MASSIVE earthworks on the K2 million Kisunopo-Tukupangi road project in Imbonggu, Southern Highlands, is progressing effectively, Governor William Powi says.
Powi told The National that the road was one of the more than 50 feeder road projects under construction in the province that his government had prioritised to link people to basic government services.
“Roads and bridges infrastructure and other projects are done under multi-year financing and some have been completed, some have started and some are nearing completion,” he said.
“We are slowly getting the rural people connected to services, they are often the growth engine of a country.”
Powi said the government was empowering people in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) activities, and people in the rural areas would part-take in this vital activity if they had access to good roads.
“We can’t expect people to be involved in SMEs when we don’t provide road access for them,” he said.
“Most of the feeder roads have been improved and the provincial government recently announced the K10 million for the 30 established agribusiness groups in the 20 local level governments in the five districts.”
Powi said the development of road networks in the province would bring social, cultural and economic change in the lives of the people and help in reducing poverty and pave the way for other developments to come.
He said once the road projects were completed, other services would come in line such as markets, electricity and others.
