Concern raised over representation

THE PNG Teachers Association has raised concern after the Gulf education board leave fares committee made decisions without association representation.
Association general secretary David Numbaming said one of their representatives should be present during decisions made by provincial or national education committees regarding teachers’ issues.
“It’s mandatory that PNGTA reps be present in any meeting concerning teachers,” he said.
In a letter to the association headquarters, Gulf president David Waisa said the branch needed immediate legal advice to verify the legality of Gulf education board’s leave fares committee decisions on leave fare entitlements of the teachers without a representative of the association.
Numbaming said they had engaged a lawyer to take the matter to court because it was in the Teachings Service Commission Act that a representative from the association should be included.
Meanwhile, Numbaming has urged provincial governments to pay teachers’ leave fares on time.
He said teachers should get their entitlements by next month.
