SIXTEEN people in Western Highlands and Jiwaka have completed a one-week business development training under the Bank of Papua New Guinea Microfinance expansion programme.
Microfinance expansion project trainer Sebastian Mugup said the programme was to educate people on how to conduct business.
Mugup said 85 per cent of the population still did not have a bank account because they did not appreciate the importance of saving money.
“After attending the programme you will be able to put into practice what you have learnt,” he said.
Project manager for the Bank of PNG programme Jacob Gop said it required a US$28 million (K36 million) funding.
It began in 2011 and will end this year.
He said there were many programmes under the project aimed to sustain the lives of the people.
“This shows that the Government is dealing directly with the small people in villages,” he said.
“We will rollout this programme to help our people.
“It is very important that such trainings are reaching out to many people who have come to realise the very important part of budgeting and saving.”
