Finding work in PNG

Letters

I AM convinced to express my view about the current unemployment situation in the country.
I am a third-year University of Technology student.
I’ve tried all my best to at least help myself financially by getting employed and complete my studies, but to no avail.
I have applied to more than 10 companies since July last year but nothing has happened.
Some of my friends and even senior working people keep on telling me that nowadays, it is “who you know, not what you know”.
My point is: If we are talking about development in the country but keep practising this wantok system attitude, then how can we develop?
Where will the university graduates work because people at the higher positions will be recruiting their save faces only?
Where will those who don’t have, work?
Are they going to roam the streets seeking employment for the rest of their life?
Some of us come from a background where we are the cream of our family and village.
We do not have contacts working in senior positions and as such, our degrees and
diplomas will be a waste of time and money.
If we are to develop this nation, let’s work together as one people and employ people based on what they know.
Stop this ‘who you know’ mindset.
I do not see a future for 75 per cent of university students if we keep on practising this stupid ‘who you know’ system.
Let us work together as a team to develop human resource in PNG by recruiting people based on what they know.
