Fire service gets fire trucks

ONE of the biggest problem that the Papua New Guinea Fire Service faces is in logistics and equipment needed to fight fires, chief Bill Roo says.
Roo thanked the Japanese government for donating fire trucks for the department.
The two ladder trucks were recently donated by the Japanese embassy through the assistance from the grant assistance for grassroots human security projects, a small component of Japan’s official development assistance programme in the country.
Roo said the two ladder trucks cost the about K1 million to purchase and ship to PNG.
He said the trucks would be used to fight fires in tall buildings and the ladders could reach up to four floors.
“With the development of many high rise buildings in Port Moresby and other centres, the Fire Service need more of such vehicles and equipment to handle fires in different situations.”
He said the two trucks would be used in Port Moresby.
“We are grateful to have a good relationship with Japan who are funding the trucks for us.”
He said technicians from Japan who will be flown into the country to train fire fighters.
Roo said the Fire Service had two of such vehicles in the past but they were not operational anymore.
Japan also donated six fire trucks last year during the Apec meeting.
