THE number of fire fighters in Port Moresby had been boosted to address increasing fire emergencies and other accidents in the city after 50 recruits were certified on Friday.
Chief Fire officer Bill Roo said due to limited funding and the increasing demand for fire service in National Capital District and Central, the organisation decided to train the Port Moresby-based fire service trainees first.
“Given the fact that the fire incidents in the city are occurring frequently, we need more fire fighters to meet rising demand,” he said.
Roo said the Fire Service was a noble profession and a technical field that needed people with required skills and knowledge to meet its core function.
He said this following the presentation of certificates to two females and 48 fire officers after completing their seven weeks training recently.
Meanwhile, the AutoZeal International had supported the organisation with a fully kitted fire truck at the value of K1 million.
Chief executive officer Benard George said the company was proud to help the PNG Fire Service.
