A NEW bridge has brought relief to hundreds of people who for years could not cross the Lupogo River when it is flooded.

The river is close to the Wafi-Golpu project’s Demakwa camp during flooding. It affected the company’s operations and the movement of people in Hengambu, Yanta and Babuaf who have to cross the river to reach the Lae-Bulolo highway.

The new Demakwa bridge was opened last Saturday.

Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour and Wafi-Golpu project director Max Esparon opened the new bridge witnessed by about 200 people, including locals from nearby Timini village and representatives from Hengambu, Yanta and Babuaf.

Seymour thanked Wafi-Golpu Joint Venture, owner of the project, for the developments it had brought so far.

Landowner representatives Gelam Lautu from Yanta, Paul Yana from Hengambu and Chester Inoa from Babuaf urged the clans to work with the project developers.

Esparon thanked the dedicated project team members for the bridge construction.

“One of our roles in developing the project is in providing connections between people so that we can work together in a spirit of cooperation,” Esparon said.

The 42m bailey bridge took about four months to complete.
