A PORT Moresby elementary school classroom that was badly damaged by a large truck last year has been rebuilt.
Hagara Elementary School head teacher Igo Borori said the school had been given K40,000 by the company that owned the truck to rebuild the damaged section of the building.
The company did not wish to be named but hoped that the rebuilt structure would help students.
“The building is complete but we have to look for desks and chairs because all of the properties inside were taken away, including goods in the truck when the truck crashed into the classroom,” he said.
Borori said the school had more than 1,000 students with 18 teachers and staff members and the rebuilding of the damaged classroom was a relief for them.
“We were squeezing the affected teachers and students into other classes and getting normal lessons on after the incident last year and this year we will be okay with the new classroom,” he said.
He said the company that owned the truck had set up a tent to accommodate the displaced students and teachers last year.
Borori urged Motu Koita Assembly chairman Dadi Toka Jr to help move the school to a safer location away from the road.
The head teacher thanked the company responsible for their immediate help with the problem that allowed the lessons to continue.
He added that the school’s name would be changed to Hagara Early Childhood Care and the new building would be used to cater for grades one and two.
