Firm promotes safe, healthy marine environment

THE initiative to promote a cleaner, healthier and safer marine environment should be driven by corporate entities and the general public alike, says PNG Port Corporation acting managing director Fego Kiniafa.
“Most rubbish that are washed into the sea or dumped on the sea shores are household rubbish and industrial waste from the city which will eventually pollute the sea, kill the fish and also cause damage to small ships and motorised dinghies,” he said.
“The company is committed to positive changes not only within the organisation but also towards the surrounding communities.”
Kiniafa led a team of company staff on a cleanathon between the Port Moresby Technical College and the Kanudi LP gas terminal.
He said as a port facility operator, PNG Ports was also taking the lead to clean up the ports, waterfront and seashores like its key stakeholder, the National Maritime Authority, did annually.
PNG Ports’ initiative started in 2011 to develop the cleanathon as an annual programme on a quarterly basis as a way forward to achieving the objective.
“It is important that PNG Ports, as a leading corporate citizen, plays its part in endeavouring to change the image of this country,” Kiniafa said.
