Fishing project will generate millions for ENB: Brown

A FISHING project in East New Britain is expected to generate millions of Kina into the province, according to former politician and businessman Sinai Brown.
And he urged the national and provincial governments to support the Rabaul Tuna Export Processing Zone project.
Brown is also the adviser to the two free trade zone projects in the province: the Gazelle-Agro Industrial Special Economic Zone and the Rabaul Tuna Export Processing Zone.
He said the two projects were important.
Brown said the fishing project alone would bring millions of kina into the province.
Therefore, the provincial government and the people must support it.
The first fishing project in PNG was in East New Britain but when the Government wanted to go into processing, Lae and Madang were chosen.
“The Atalilikun Bay in the Reimber-Livuan local level government in Gazelle district is the breeding ground for tuna,” Brown said.
“The best place to start the fishing project is in ENB because this is where the breeding ground for tuna is.
“We have tried many times to set up fishing projects in the province but failed because of the competition with other fishing projects in the country.”
He said when he and Sir Rabbie Namaliu were members of parliament, they supported the fishing project they started under the New Britain Resource Company.
It reached an agreement with a Taiwanese company to set up fishing project but failed because of the competition with the fishing cannery projects in Lae and Madang.
He said the province would have the two free trade zone projects. The main focus will be on the fishing project.
