FIVE of 20 foreigners who owned stores in settlements around Port Moresby and who were arrested earlier this year for allegedly breaching their visa and work permit conditions have been deported, according to the Immigration and Citizenship Authority.
Immigration and Citizenship Authority (ICA) inspection coordinator John Bria said out of the 20, seven had been arrested and charged, five were deported and three referred to the Labour Department and had were issued infringement notices while the others were still under investigation.
On Jan 28, officers from Immigration, police and the Labour and Industrial Relations Department carried inspections on 28 shops which resulted in the arrest of 19 Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian.
Labour and Industrial Relations officers issued infringement notices to the foreigners during the inspection.
Bria said they found fake papers with the foreigners who were paying local employees well below the national minimum wage rate.
Immigration and Border Security Minister Westly Nukundi also raised concern that many foreigners were coming into the country and being involved in businesses that locals could do.
He said how the foreigners came into the country was the issue of concern as many were using fake documents.
Nukundj said their entry into the country using fake documents was a serious issue and a concern for the country’s national security.

  • Good, send them all back.
Take possession of there trade store.
Put up for local tender only.
Keep going I’m sure you will find another 20 that are sub branches of the first 20. It’s deeper than you think, these illegal aliens Bangladeshians/ Indians / Chinese etc have been taking over this businesses for the past 30 years.
    Stop it now.

    • Your are looking at Asians only. What about Australians who are on marriage of convenience with dependency visas conducting business, robbing assets from real Melanesian shareholders & denying them justice; their constitutional and customary rights? These Ozzie’s are being sheltered by police officers and the land owners with purported documents. Get your magnifiers on & penalise duly. Defend your own, not criminals. Can you imagine us doing that in Australian soil?

  • thousands of illegal aliens of Asian origin are running simple trade stores in settlements, does the work permit allows for that? with fancy job titles coming in just to mend the cashier box, keep on….frightening numbers a feeding here…deport them please. We want genuine investors and employers.

  • There is alot more, even get married to locals just to be secure, please go through all the provinces, into the villages, you will see them running trade stores, if the government has started to weed & clean out then this is another way to take back PNG, please authourity step in & help for the better………

  • Just throw out these idiots from the villages, settlements, districts, provinces, regions and country with their fake documents and contrabands. They are not genuine investors who can meaning fully develop this beautiful country. With due respect to other genuine developers, they are like virus eating right into the fabric of the SME endeavours of small hard working people… These people will not take PNG back, rather they will drag PNG back.

  • Hi John & team, I suggest you do not stop there. Continue to also hold Papua New Guinean collaborators responsible by fines or jails terms. Those at the immigration and those landlords that enter the foreigners into business agreement. I am sure diligent and honest procedures where not followed. We ourselves are creating avenues for corrupt practices. Right now we are pointing fingers at one direction only.

  • The question I’d be asking is _ How did they get into PNG in the first place? Is there a government department with established systems set up with the aim of making sure genuine people are entering the country? Why are we be going around the country now rounding up such people and sending them back to where they came from when we should have systems in place, if working, should not have allowed them into the country in the first place. I’m assuming the systems we have in place (whoever government department is responsible for) are not working and/or the people working in that department are incompetent or just corrupt.
