Floods wreak havoc in Oro

FOUR weeks of continuous heavy rain in Oro province is causing havoc.
It was reported that many homes and food gardens were washed away in 19 villages in the Tamata LLG.
Some 5,000 people are affected when the Gira and Eia rivers in the LLG, near the border of Oro and Morobe, burst their banks.
Acting Oro provincial administrator Owen Awaita said the unconfirmed report only reached Popondetta over the weekend.
He said that an assessment team was sent out to the affected area yesterday.
He told the The National the National Disaster Centre yesterday released an additional K200,000.
Mr Awaita said that the funds would go towards assisting all affected villages affected by floods in the province.
“We will seek another K50,000 from the Government to ensure relief supplies reach all affected area,” he said.
