CONTINUOUS rain in the past few weeks have caused flooding, destroying homes and food gardens in Western’s Lake Murray area, Middle Fly.
Local George Neiman said floodwaters had inundated homes with several families displaced, while also forcing schools in the area to close.
“Many are struggling to find shelter, most food gardens have been destroyed.
“Food is scarce and people are struggling,” he said.
“Our cash crops are also affected, the floods have put a dent on our source of income from our cocoa, vanilla and betel nuts.”
Neiman said the Lake Murray villagers need urgent assistance from the district, provincial and national disaster and emergency offices.
“We need relief teams and medical professionals to come quickly,” he said.
“Classrooms are inundated by floodwaters, students are not attending classes.
“The second term of the academic year has started, and we are still waiting.”
