PRIME Minister James Marape says the Government is committed to improving conditions for policemen and officers in the country.
“We will be announcing the police modernisation plan for the police force in the first quarter of this year,” he said.
“It will help protect the police.”
Marape said this in response to the killing of Const Timot Kavanamur who was shot dead while clearing illegal miners in Porgera on Jan 26.
“This is not the first time a policeman was killed while in the line of duty,” he said. The plan to be announced will hope to help secure their protection and needs.
“Our policemen, women and other officers must feel secure in their work stations.
“They will be given the necessary skills (training), be equipped to deal with domestic issues and to also protect themselves.
“The other aspect of it will be to see that all policemen and women are insured, so that if one is injured or killed in the line of duty, the insurance can financially cover
their loved ones and family members.”
Marape said that despite all the safety risks, policemen and women continued to serve the people.
“I wish to thank them all for their commitments to the profession, and I promise to address the issue,” he said.
I will do my best to ensure that policemen, women and officers are protected by law.
Meanwhile, Marape also extended his condolences to Kavanamur’s family and other families of policemen who lost their lives in the line of duty in the past.
