Focus on service delivery leaders

Letters

I READ with great interest how our MPs still cannot differentiate between leadership and their mandated task.
Our Melanesian culture and customs are deeply embedded in all of us.
We expect our leaders to be in all our ceremonies, to be in the front line in all circumstances.
We will always follow what our leaders tell us to do.
I refer to quotes from Minister Rainbo Paita in The National on Jan 9.
“So the MP will always be thinking of how can I win back my seat in the next election if I don’t turn up and contribute?”
This is not the primary concern for an MP that is in Parliament.
His primary concern is service delivery such as building hospitals, roads, classrooms and increase employment opportunities in his 5 year term.
Human beings were created in an environment that can sustain themselves.
Paita said voters would ask assistance for boat fares, school fees and medical fees.
With our leaders handing out mere petty assistance as boat fares and school fees every time we ask, I wonder how we will develop?
We look upon our leaders with the “spoon feeding” and “free hand-out” mentality.
A mandated leader’s task is to look for ways on how he/she can develop his/her people’s mentality to be self sustaining in the creation/maintenance of basic services such as roads, health, education and employment creation.
When looking at petty issues and encouraging free handout, it affects the growth and development of this country.
With respect to the honourable MP mentioned.
