TEN thousand kina worth of food rations has been distributed to King tide-affected islands in Aitape, West Sepik, a senior district official says.
Philip Nasi Jnr told The National that K10,000 was spent on sago and garden food supplies from the mainland that district officials had distributed to the islands over the weekend.
He said a further K10,000 would be spent on store goods and other basic items that would be delivered to the islands this week.
Nasi said due to limited funding, the district was unable to purchase rice to assist the islanders.
“Our officials have distributed 50 bags of sago to Seleo Angel and Tumeleo (islands) while Ali which has the biggest population got 88 bags,” he said.
Apart from sago, bananas were distributed to all four islands.
Nasi said although the islanders were slowly recovering from the disaster, the current rough seas, especially in the afternoons remained a challenge for them to travel.
