The construction of a footbridge connecting two council wards in the Imbonggu district of Southern Highlands has brought joy to thousands of people.

Imbonggu MP and Works Minister Francis Awesa arranged a funding of K24,500 for the bridge.

Titus Mil, a community leader and supervisor of the 45m-long Lai River footbridge, said the bridge would make life easier for mothers to take their garden produce to the markets and students to go to school.

Mil-Werip has a population of 1,500 people and has an elementary and a primary school including churches. The ward is at the foot of a mountain range that borders the Inbonggu and Nipa-Kutubu districts and their only way  to the outside world is over the footbridge.

Mil-Werip councillor Jimmy Apon said the footbridge was the lifeline of the people and Awesa’s prompt action to provide funding for it had brought tears of joy to the people.

He said he would do his best ensure a permanent bridge was built over the river to serve the people.
