SEVEN fishing groups in Madang district have been given  outboard motors by Markham MP Paul Isikiel.

He also gave a number of cheques totalling K115,000 to church groups in Riwo village outside Madang.

The Riwo Lutheran Church received K75,000, Lutheran youths K10,000 and the Catholic Church Women’s Group K30,000.

Madang district administrator Lawrence Pitor said the funding was from commitments made by ousted Madang MP Nixon Duban.

He said other commitments made and approved by the district committee during Duban’s term would be honoured.

Isikiel said the Government had committed K34 million for the upgrading and maintenance of the Madang-Lae Highway starting next year.

He said the Government had not forgotten the Madang district in terms of funding.

Sir Angmai Bilas urged the Government to build more roads in the rural areas of Ambenob and Transgogol LLGs.

Riwo villagers performed a ceremonial koniak drinking as a way of saying thank you to Isikiel and the Madang district administration.

Koniak is a juice derived from the roots of a special plant and is drunk on ceremonial occasions. It is popularly known in other areas as kava.
