Forgotten suburbs

Letters

AS CONCERNED Taxpayer of Port Moresby (The National, Oct 6) said, making the capital city look good for Apec is just a show while little is done to improve things in the suburbs where roads, drains, water and power supplies, and rubbish collection need help.
When will NCD serve all its city residents equally?
While the services I have mentioned above need attention, we still see the main roads dug up every three months or so just to impress visitors.
Even the main routes are decorated on an ad hoc basis and do not reflect the real picture of the city as a whole.
On taxes, there must be something done so the workers are not being taxed twice.
It is not fair for workers to pay income tax and GST at the same time.
To my understanding, GST was put in place when the head tax was abolished, so everyone in the country pays some form of tax to the government.
Workers are paying their fair share as income tax.
I suggest all employees who pay tax should be exempted from paying GST by using their company IDs.
Only unemployed and self-employed people should pay GST as their share of the head tax.
This will also help minimise urban drift and ensure that only employed people live in cities and towns and are given the government services as the employed citizens deserve.
