I REFER to the recent visit by Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra with a business delegation.

It was a timely visit to help diversify our trade and investment relations.

Thailand’s economy is very competitive in all aspects and it is successfully assembling vehicles such as Ford Rangers for the Asia-Pacific region.

Thailand is the leading producer and exporter of canned tuna.

For the latter, the PNG government needs to encourage joint ventures with Thai tuna canneries to relocate and set up processing plants in PNG in order to qualify under preferential market access into the European Union under EPA rules

of origin.

PNG needs to strategically open up its economy to all trading partners – both existing and new ones – for mutual gains.
