The Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation’s (PNGSF) Northern region office conducted clinics for four days in the Wampar local-level government, Huon Gulf, last week.
The physical education teachers of Muya, Tanam, Erap Boys Town, Chivasing and Nowa attended the clinics at Erap Primary School.
Most of the participants were females, only three were male teachers.
Mamose/New Guinea Islands sports development officer Aaron Mugaliong said the first two days focussed on sports and community administration while the remaining sessions were on community coaching and officiating.
“We involved our specialist from the codes of athletics, rugby union, soccer, volleyball and basketball to run the trainings,” Mugaliong said.
“Rugby union secured goalposts for rugby union and a goalmouth for soccer to be delivered to Erap Primary School.
“This was the announcement made by rugby union development officer Robin Tarere.”
PNGSF Mamose and New Guinea Islands manager Geoffrey Gideon said the idea was for teachers, who are not trained in physical education, to be able to teach those codes. Gideon said physical education was a structured session.
“One of the weaknesses in Papua New Guinea’s sports industry is physical education,” he said.
“In the western culture, physical education is taught as part of the school curriculum.
“If physical education is taught well in schools, skills will start building up from there.”
