THE Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation (PNGSF) on Thursday gave the green light for national federations in the country to resume their respective competitions under new orders from the National Pandemic Controller’s office.
PNGSF acting executive director Micah James said the latest measures released from the Controller’s office on Wednesday would be in effect starting immediately for 11 sporting codes with competitions expected to start without spectators.
“The measures will now come into effect from Aug 17 for the rest of the pandemic period or until otherwise changed by the Controller,” he said.
“The PNGSF still maintains the approval authority for sporting federations to begin training and competitions in the country.
The measures are:

  • No spectators allowed at venues;
  • No more than 50 persons (officials, players) per field of play; and,
  • For the National Capital District only, mask wearing at all sporting fields is compulsory.

James said players and officials involved directly in the game were exempt from wearing face masks.
He said the special spectators numbers and exceptions for rugby league, soccer and cricket had all been revoked.
“The no spectators’ law is for all sports.”
He said all sports are encouraged to run their competition schedules to reflect the Controllers orders.
The controller’s Covid-19 surveillance and monitoring team will at the competition venues to ensure compliance.
AFL, archery, basketball, cricket, golf, netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, swimming and volleyball have been granted approval to run their programmes around the country under their Covid-19 protocols.
