FOUR teams have been confirmed for the UPNG Rugby Football League major semifinals this weekend at the UPNG league Oval.
Chairman Sandis Tsaka Jr confirmed the four finalists were BBM Nokondis, SBA Eagles, Veari Spiders and Souths Arts Warriors.
Tsaka said Nokondi was the first team to book a semifinal berth after beating the Waps Tigers and they face the Eagles.
“The Eagles are the minor premiers for this year and they won’t be an easy game for the Nokondis,” Tsaka Jr said.
“Veari Spiders, who were also on bye had a week-long rest and are well prepared and pumped up to go up against Warriors, who are the underdogs of University league,” Tsaka said.
“This is major semifinal and the winners of these fixtures advance to the grand final while the losers bow out for the season,” he said.
Tsaka Jr said he would be running a division one game which will be trial match for team Red and Black that will hosted as a curtain raiser for the major semifinal. Tsaka said the purpose of the representative fixture would be to name a squad for the UPNG Pythons — their school team.
“We will use this division one game to identify players and select them for the UPNG Pythons for any representative games,” Tsaka said.
Tsaka added the women would play their final matches during the grand final day in Sept 16.
Tsaka called out for sponsors to help the league and promote the league into something bigger.
