FORMER Papua New Guinea University of Technology lecturer Rai Manu is among four Taiwan Scholarship 2022 recipients who will be departing next Friday for their studies.
Manu had just resigned from the university to further his PhD in cybersecurity.
Taipei Economic and Cultural representative to Papua New Guinea Oliver Liao said the scholarships would help students further their higher education and post graduate studies, build bilateral exchanges and friendship between PNG and Taiwan.
“We want to help develop human resources of PNG through education,” he said adding that one recipient had already left for Taiwan and the other three will travel to Taiwan between Aug 19 and 26.
The four recipients and their field of studies are:

  • RAI Manu, doctor of philosophy degree in information engineering and computer science;
  • PAMELA Matawan, bachelors of education degree in international affairs and diplomacy programme;
  • JACOB Alfred, master’s programme in tropical agriculture and international cooperation; and,
  • JOE Bruce, bachelors in education degree in Chinese language learning programme.

Liao said the recipients would receive tuition subsidies, monthly allowances, health benefits and return-trip tickets from Port Moresby to Taiwan.
He said about 70 Papua New Guineans had benefited from the scholarship programme since 2010.
Matawan said she would take full advantage of the opportunity to progress her knowledge and skills.
“This is a good opportunity for me to better myself to be able to contribute to nation-building, directly or indirectly,” Matawan added.
“When I return to PNG, surely I can use what I have learnt to help contribute to the development of my country.”
