TWO Papua New Guineans have been awarded prestigious Chevening Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom next year.
Dakan Doiwa will be doing her masters in conflict prevention, dispute resolution at the University of Westminster. Enoch Sihil will be undertaking mineral law and policy at the University of Dundee.
Under the special arrangement with Steamships Trading and the Swire Group, an additional two scholars were awarded university places.
Gretel Kogora will be studying international commercial law at the University of Westminster (Steamships Trading Ltd) and Peter Popena will be at Bradford University (Swire Group).
At an event to farewell the recipients, Jackie Barson, the British High Commissioner said: “Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential future leaders of their country across a wide range of fields including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion and academia.
“I am happy to say that the success rate of Papua New Guineans studying in the UK under the UK Government’s scholarship programme is very healthy, with PNG being awarded 50% of the total scholarships available across the South Pacific.”
Barson said provided that there were funds in the years ahead, they looked forward to sending more talented PNG students to the UK for studies.
Eddie Ruha, on behalf of Steamships Trading Company and the Swire Group of Companies, co-sponsors of two of the four scholarships, congratulated the recipients, urging them to return to PNG and contribute towards nation-building.
The British High Commission’s association with Steamships and the Swire Group began in 2009, when the two organisations first co-funded Junior Novera, who graduated with an MSc in Conservation Science from Lancaster University last year.
This was followed by Annuncia Kokiai, who just recently completed an MBA at the University of Edinburgh.
