IMMUNISATION programmes in East New Britain’s Pomio are expected to improve following the installation of solar-powered freezers for vaccine storage.
Pomio health coordinator Imelda Kally said the installation of the freezers in all 14 health facilities were completed this month.
Kally said the coverage rate in Pomio should reach the required targets of the Health Department.
“Prior to the installation of the freezers, Pomio was unable to reach its annual target,” she said.
“Training has been conducted for officers the health facilities on how to manage the vaccine freezers in terms of the required temperatures and handling of the freezers.
“It is also a requirement for the officers to report if they face any issues in the future regarding the solar-powered vaccine freezers.
“The freezers were supplied through the support of Unicef and the Health Department.”
Kally added that a review of the health sector in Pomio would determine how the installation of the freezers had enhanced immunisation coverage.
