Funding woes stopping school from fixing leaking sewage

SEVERE funding woes at Gerehu Primary School in National Capital District has resulted in raw sewage leaking into the school grounds and left unattended.
Headmaster Erick Lakou said there was a blockage in the sewerage pipe which ran through the middle of the school grounds.
Raw sewage was flowing out and giving out a strong smell.
Lakou said the Government banned all schools from charging project fees and the school was therefore depending solely on tuition fee-free funding.
He said Gerehu Primary School had not received all its allocated TFF funds and that had severely affected school operations.
Lakou said for term one of this year, the school received only K56,000 of the total K71,000 (K15,000 outstanding). For term two it received K32,000 of K71,000 (K39,000 outstanding).
Lakou said K54,000 was still outstanding for terms one and two while the school was still waiting for its allocation of K71,000 for term three.
He said the sewage problem had further compounded the school’s money shortage issues with big outstanding bills for electricity and water.
