HAVING to host the Under-15 FIBA Oceania Championships is another great opportunity for the country in hosting international events.
Basketball Federation of PNG executive officer Stephen Damien, is confident of delivering the event (Dec 4-8) at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre after successfully hosting the inaugural Melanesian Cup last September.
Damien spoke of TAIC as a venue that has allowed not only basketball but other sporting codes as well to host international events and acknowledged the government for their continuous support in ensuring the legacy of the infrastructure boom prior to the 2015 Pacific Games leaves on.
“PNG has a track record of hosting successful international events in the recent years now and BFPNG, through our partners, we will ensure that we keep this tradition,” Damien said.
Damien added that this will be the first time for FIBA Oceania to host an U15 regional level competition and BFPNG is proud to be the first to host this event just like the Melanesian Cup last year.
Damien said the visiting countries which include Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Guam (men only), Samoa and Tonga would be residing at 2015 Pacific Games Village at the University of Papua New Guinea.
“We are just grateful that UPNG has allowed us the facility. We will have over 200 young athletes and officials and the former 2015 Games Village is ideal to host this large number,” Damien said
