A MEMBER of Tommy Baker’s gang accused of killing a security guard at a resort four years ago has been found dead in Milne Bay, police say.
Provincial police commander Supt Peter Barkie said the body was found floating in a river at an oil palm estate in Alotau.
He had been at large since the resort incident on Nov 11, 2017.
Police took the body to the Alotau General Hospital to be identified.
Hospital staff found the tattoo of a gecko on the shoulder – a link to the Baker gang.
“He was part of a 10-man gang armed with three rifles and other dangerous weapons who held up the resort staff and escaped with the loot,” he said.
“The gang consisting of mostly prison escapees had earlier on the same day held up a shop on Samarai Island, and (took) a large quantity of liquor, fuel and about K1,000 in cash.”
Supt Barkie said they were yet to find out the cause of his death.
“We are awaiting the post-mortem to be done.
“But from what we have gathered, he must have been killed by his former gang members and his body dumped in the bush.
“The body (could have been carried down to) the river by flooding caused by the heavy rain.”
