Gas-fired station supplying power: CEO

THE 58-megawatt gas-fired power station operated by NiuPower Ltd is supplying power to the Port Moresby grid to address the city’s power issue, says chief executive officer Michael Uiari.
He told The National that NiuPower was currently supplying up to 52 megawatts for the Port Moresby grid.
Uiari blamed “the lack of integrity” for the failure to dispatch at full capacity. Their engines had been de-rated to accommodate grid fluctuations.
Earlier this year, Uiari said the issue with the Port Moresby (grid) was the aging transmission and distribution infrastructure and its inability to keep up with the expansion rate.
“We have expressed a willingness to assist PNG Power with that investment if they can first help us improve our liquidity position,” he said.
“We will now be working with PNG Power Ltd, Kumul Consolidated Holdings Ltd (KCHL), and Obed Batia (acting PNG Power boss) to ensure this happens.
“Restoring its reliability depends on ensuring that PNG Power is in a financially sustainable position.”
