Four home runs helped Gazelle defeat Saints 10-8 in the Port Moresby Softball women’s elimination final at Bisini on Saturday.
Saints were leading 8-6 at the bottom of the sixth innings and looked like they were on the way to the preliminary finals against Bears but that was not the case as a desperate Gazelle got the better of their opponents.
With the pressure mounting, Gazelle they capitalised well in their batting and defending to deny the opposition from advancing in the finals.
Gazelle equalised 8-8 after fielding errors allowed two runners to sneak home. They pulled off another double to increase their lead to 10-8.
In the end, Saints batting was unable to claw the side back into the game.
Gazelle coach Peni Tonga said monitoring their opponents’ deliveries had enabled them to hit good runs and come away with the win.
Tonga said he was expecting a much tougher encounter against their next opponents, the Bear.
Meanwhile, reigning premiers United Sisters broke minor premiers Bears’ hearts with a 11-3 win to advance to the grand final next week.
