PORT Moresby General Hospital has a new CT scanner for the use of patients who recently had been referred to another hospital, chief executive officer Grant Muddle says.

Patients visiting the General Hospital had to be referred to the Pacific International Hospital (PIH) after its only CT scanner broke down.

Muddle said biomedical engineers were working on it.

PIH offered a 40% discount to patients referred from the hospital’s accident and emergency unit.

“The new CT machine is here and installed. The old machine is still being repaired,’’ Muddle said.

He said the hospital was getting two more X-ray units to complement the one they were using which was being overloaded.

He said staff in the X-ray unit had noted that the number of patients seeking X-ray services had increased dramatically since the Government’s announcement of free primary health care and specialised health care policies.
