The golf tournament at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, ended with the mixed foursomes event on Monday.
Papua New Guinea’s Natalie Mok and Terrence Coleman ended the first day fourball best score with 75 gross.
The duo carried each other through the second day of the mixed foursomes to 163 of the alternate shots round.
They ended the third and the final day of competition with 166 gross in the fourball aggregate round.
Mok and Coleman hit 81 and 85 respectively.
They achieved a score of 329 in the overall tally.
Coach Nelson Gabriel said he and his golfers had learned a lot from the experience.
“I want to thank PNG Olympic Committee secretary-general Auvita Rapilla, her deputy Andrew Lepani, PNG Golf Association president Peter Del Monte, chef de mission Karo Lelai and the team for giving me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take my junior champions to the Youth Olympic Games,” Gabriel said.
“I saw the top young golfers in the world.
“I talked to many coaches and managers, and shared and gathered valuable information.
“I now know how to better prepare my players to reach that level.
“The team did their best but still fell short because of many factors — weather, different grass to putt on, deep bunkers and the distance measured in yards.
“But the main factor is that our golfers were up against the world’s best ranked amateur players who are used to participating in competitions of this stature.”
Gabriel said he picked up points of improvement from both athletes throughout the tournament.
“Natalie needs to more work on her swing to be consistent,” Gabriel said.
“So she can apply it confidently without thinking of adjusting in the middle of the round. Her mental strength is excellent.”
