Goroka MP Ame plans road and street lights

GOROKA town will have sealed roads with street lighting to make the town an appealing place, says Goroka MP and Vice-Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Henry Ame.
He was speaking in Port Moresby on Friday during the payment of K7.5 million – the first 40 per cent payment of funds – for the redevelopment of Goroka Main Market.
Goroka, in pre-independence days, used to be one of the best places in Papua New Guinea to live and work in, he said.
The town was booming when major third-level airline Talair was based there until its closure in the early 1990s.
Goroka has taken a downward spiral since then, and it was only this year, that it received a new lease on life when the new-look K110 million airport was opened recently by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
Ame said K8 million had been secured from the Works Department to seal town streets with counter funding from the provincial government.
The roads connecting to the controversial Goroka Main Market would be redeveloped, starting this month.
“The town will be sealed with lighting and beautification to complement the recently extended airport runway and the air terminal, new Goroka Main Market that will be redeveloped and the Goroka General Hospital in the town,” Ame said.
“This will change the face of Goroka town.
“We don’t want Goroka to be seen as a rural town.
“We want to make it look good and safe for people who want to live there and contribute to the province.”
