Government endorses youth age category, says official

National

THE National Executive Council has formally endorsed the youth age – 12 years to 30.
National Youth Development Authority director general Joe Itaki, who signed his four-year contract at Government House yesterday, told The National that NEC had directed the Constitutional and Law Reform Commission to work with NYDA to start review of the National Youth Development Authority Act 2014 for amendments to be made on the youth age bracket from 12 to 38 years to 12 to 30 years.
“That is the Government-sanctioned youth age group from this year going forward until another decision overrides that,” Itaki said.
“We are now reviewing the NYDA Act to capture the youth threshold age limit change.
“Youth in the district and local level government (LLG) has been the priority that I have placed in the last nine months,” he said.
Itaki said work had started to strengthen youth networks.

  • What does the NYDA do?????

I understand this is something to do with the youths and their issues and to identify and establish programmes to address them but what is there on the ground for us to see and feel/demonstrate that there is a constitutionally approved office that is mandated by law/act to do this? There’s a million youths around the country (educated, uneducated, literate, illiterate, employed, unemployed, in towns/cities, settlements/rural areas) that can contribute to the development of this country positively but the statistics on the ground give us a negative indication of the potential youths can bring to the table. I maybe the only one that is unaware of the existence of this office (until now) and what programmes they have in place to help youths around the country. And yet we have a Director General who is re-signing a contract and it still remains to be seen what he gets paid for.

  • I agree with you DS,for the last 25 years that I live on this planet I never knew that our country had such organization/institution in place to cater for unfortunate youths on the streets. If we have NYDA director that occupy this public office than why he ignore many school age children roaming the street of urban centers in PNG begging people for dirty coins, joining prostitution by end up in all the night clubs, drugs abuses, drinking homebrew/steams,engaged in criminal activities and many more…All of these activities are done mainly by youth as you have said of age group from 12-38 years.Only when NYDA steps in and addresses the youths about their purposes and functions and look in to them indeed,I don’t think PNG will face such problems like law and order issue where government spend a lot of money on.People will move around freely without fearing anyone,so why are they signing the contract for someone doesn’t know the job responsibilities of this socalled NYDA.I guess a lot of tax payers money will be wasted again to this malfunction big endless holes where it could hardly finds out where it ends up…

  • No brainer:
The definition for youth, “is the period between childhood and adulthood”.
childhood age ranges from 7-12 years old, Youth age ranges from 13 – 18 years old, Young adults age ranges from 19 – 24 years old.
When you reach 25 years old, you are already an Adult.
You cannot categorize or brand them (12 – 30 year olds) as youth because it doesn’t make sense.
The way you talk to a 12 year will not be the same when you talk to a 30 year old. For a 12 year old, the brain is still developing, this will also be the start where he/she will be experiencing hormone changes and etc; whereas a 30 year has gone through alot of changes (physically, mentally and etc) and has gained alot of experience throughout the years.
