CHIMBU Governor Michael Dua has backed kickboxer Jeffrey Daka who will face Taiwanese, Australian and Pakistani opponents at next month’s World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) welterweight championship.
In Port Moresby yesterday, Dua assisted Daka with kickboxing equipment ahead of the championship in Kimbe, West New Britain, on Nov 23.
“Promoting and supporting young people through sports is one of my government’s priorities so I am pleased to support our boxers,” he said.
“Unlike others, boxing is an individual sport which demands the commitment of athletes.
“Jeffery will be representing PNG so I am happy to support him.”
Daka, from Kamanuku Tribe in Kundiawa-Gembogl, said he was grateful for Dua’s support.
“I have been in the sport for 18 years and I have never received a formal sponsor or support from anyone,” he said.
“It was through my commitment and dedication that I defeated five Australian fighters.
“In May, I received assistance from Kundiawa-Gembogl MP Willie Onguglo.”
Daka said the equipment would boost his preparations for the event.
“This is not only my fight. I will represent my family, province and country. It’s a WKF title fight and I am confident of winning,” he said.
